7 Tips For A Seamless Move

South Florida Moving Checklist

Most people can agree that moving is stressful. It takes careful planning to keep track of everything you need and to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. At Veteran Moving Co, our movers in West Palm Beach know a thing or two about a seamless transition from point A to point B. We have put together our most useful tips when moving to make it less overwhelming.

Make a checklist and budget

The first thing to do is create a thorough checklist and a timeline of when you want to complete each task. Even though you want the move to be done as quickly as possible, be realistic with your goals. If you have a large home that you have filled with personal items over several years, it may take more than two weeks to have everything boxed and ready to go. As a result, give yourself sufficient time to pack everything before your moving date.

Set A Timer For Packing

A good way to ensure you get your packing done every day, but don’t overdo it is to set a timer for one or two hours to devote towards packing. People tend to procrastinate and save the bulk of the work for the night before. Not only is this stressful, but you may not have the time to implement essential packing tips to ensure items don’t break, and so you find what you need when you need it. We recommend starting with one room at a time. Always remember to set your timer before getting started.

Pack An Essential Items Box

Essential items are things you cannot comfortably live without on your first night at your new home. This should include items like towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, blankets, prescription medication, cellphone chargers, etc. If you absolutely cannot do without it, it should go in a box carefully marked “essential items”, “first night” or labeled by another memorable name. Keep this box close by. Don’t pack it away in an unknown location where it is difficult to find.

Label Boxes By Room

If you really want to spend less time rummaging for the right boxes, label each box by room. If you have multiple boxes for the same room, utilize a color-coding system. For example, instead of labeling “kitchen” on all boxes that hold kitchen items, you can label one box as “kitchen” and add a blue sticker to it. Add blue stickers to all boxes that are supposed to be unpacked in the kitchen. This level of organization will make unloading go by faster. Another helpful tip when labeling boxes is to put the room name on the top of the box and at least one of the sides.

Pack Your Boxes So They’re Full

You don’t want to leave empty spaces in your boxes because the items can easily shift during the move. Keep all your precious items from breaking by filling up the spaces with packing material, such as packing paper or biodegradable packing peanuts. Alternatively, you can fill empty spaces with soft household items. Some of the best items to use are:

  • Towels
  • Small pillows
  • Blankets
  • Old shirts
  • Stuffed toys

Pack Chemicals In A Separate Box

Items like your cleaning supplies, paints, and other chemicals should be packed in their own box, not with other household items. Separate cleaning chemicals, painting equipment, and your heavy tools from everything else.

Consider Hiring A Professional

If you really want to shift your packing into high gear, hire a professional moving company. This is strongly recommended if you live on your own and can’t find friends and family to help with the move. Make sure to vet the company thoroughly before giving them the green light.
